304 is the most common 18/8
austenitic stainless steel, very widely used in the food,
pharmaceutical, breweries and chemical industries. 304 stainless is very
popular in the building and domestic appliance sectors. The 304L grade
has a reduced carbon content. The lower carbon content will help improve
corrosion resistance after welding, and minimise carbide precipitation
during the welding operation. As a stainless steel 304 has very good
welding characteristics. Though continuous use of 304 stainless as high
temperature is not recommended occasional service of 304 stainless up to
870ºC will give good oxidation resistance.
