303 is a sulphur bearing austenitic free machining stainless. 303
stainless offers excellent corrosion resistance with improved
machineability to the more popular 304 stainless grade. As with other
austenitic stainless steel grades 303 stainless offer excellent
toughness though the higher sulphur content reduces the toughness
slightly in 303 stainless. 303 stainless will give good oxidation
resistance in occasional service up to 750ºC and in continuous service
up to 870ºC (but this is not recommended for 303 grade stainless) The
higher sulphure content of 303 stainless steel gives the grade poor
weldability and reduced formability compared with other austenitic
stainless specifications.
